Rangers Magic Number Now 5

September 25, 2012 by DSN Leave a Comment

On a night when starter Derek Holland didn’t have his best stuff and with the Rangers trailing until the 7th, third baseman Adrian Beltre powered the Rangers to a 5-4 win with a walk off single in the 9th. With the A’s clawing for a wildcard spot and the Rangers standing in the way, tonight’s game had the feel of playoff game, and with the win the Rangers have lowered the magic number to claiming the AL West crown to 5.

In the night where the Rangers saw their standard starting lineup, Beltre was also able to tie the game in the 7th with a 2-run home run after Josh Hamilton battled for a walk by the A’s left handed specialist Blevins, and then right-handed stopper Neshek left a pitch that Beltre crushed.

Beltre 2 run Home run

Adrian Beltre crosses the plate after hitting a 2-run home run in the 7th.

The game was well managed by Ron Washington as he elected to pull Holland after the 3rd inning after he had surrendered 3 runs on 77 pitches and was unable to have consistency. The bullpen battled to keep the Rangers in the game with the lone additional run coming in the 6th off of Robbie Ross.

The game winning hit was set up by first baseman Mitch Moreland getting a single to start the 9th, with Craig Gentry coming into pinch run.  Ian Kinsler then hit a single to advance the runner to second, while Elvis Andrus then sacrificed bunted the runners to second and third.  The A’s then decided to walk Hamilton which brought Beltre to the plate and who was able to get the game winning single.

Which brings us to the immortal phrase popularized by Billy Zane in Zoolander:

“Its a walk-off.”
