After the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and the Atlanta Hawks made their pitches to Dwight Howard, the Dallas Mavericks will get their chance to outline their plan for getting him his championship. One of the pitches will be if Dwight comes to Dallas, he will instantly be the franchise best center.
The beauty of having Mark Cuban as owner and Donnie Nelson as GM is that the Mavs will use all of their resources to become a Championship level club. The Mavs have spent the 2 years since their 2011 Championship run in getting the cap space to get an elite star to pair with Dirk in his last couple of years. Currently, the Mavs are $2.73 million away from being able to offer up the max to D12. The Mavs could easily clear this by trading Shawn Marion or Vince Carter with taking on minimal salary in return.
The Mavs are reportedly in talks to do a sign and trade with multiple teams for the rights for OJ Mayo, possibly returning Eric Bledsoe from the Clippers in return. So what will be the Mavs pitch?
- Max Deal for 4 years $88 million with no income tax in Texas and an inexpensive cost of living.
- Dirk will allow Dwight to be the teams lead and he will instantly be the franchise top center.
- Dirk will take a huge pay cut next season, some saying in the $10 million range, wouldn’t be surprised if it’s lower.
- Help in creating a championship team.
- Carlisle’s Flow offense will help get Dwight the ball.
- Mavs were best with a help defender like Tyson Chandler (Championship Level).
- Cuban willing to pay luxury tax.
- The list will be more.
The only two teams that currently are playoff ready are the Warriors and Rockets, however the Warriors would need a sign and trade which the Lakers have been said to be unwilling to do. The Rockets would still be seen as Harden’s team and up tempo offense may not be the best suited for Dwight.
Despite not making the playoffs in 2012-13, the Mavs were a different team in the second half when Dirk was healthy and he has thus adjusted his training. Carlisle will get the best of his players even revitalizing the careers of Mayo and Brandan Wright. Cuban called Carlisle a top 3 coach in the league and probably is only behind Popovich in San Antonio and Doc Rivers now with the Clippers.
After making their pitch, Dwight will still hear from the LA Lakers and how they will right their ship. Despite having until the 10th to decide, the Mavs will also have to work other free agents just so this isn’t another lost year.
