Despite the hard fought defensive win, the Dallas Cowboys’ defense suffered a major loss when Safety Barry Church went down with a torn right Achilles during the 3rd Quarter. After making the Cowboys in 2010 as a undrafted free agent, Church finally played himself into the starting lineup by beating out Brodney Pool during training camp this year. The Cowboys were already short in the safety position with Gerald Sensabaugh out with a calf strain from last week. However during today’s game another undrafted safety, Mana Silva took over for Church.
With the loss of Church, the Cowboys will have to focus on how to replace the Injured Reserved bound safety. The Cowboys drafted rookie Safety Matt Johnson has not been practicing and would be more of a mid season replacement, however throughout the game, starting cornerback Brandon Carr played safety during certain packages and could move there in the short term thanks to the stellar play of Mike Jenkins.
Mike Jenkins spent the majority of training camp recovering from off-season shoulder and recently started working his way back and was able to come up with some key stops in the game versus the Bucs. With cornerback being a position of strength, Carr may be the best short-term option as the Cowboys scour the free agent and practice squad market.
